-Ed doesn't have his new jacket bawww. But it looked like he'll have it in the next episode? I should look at that preview again...
-Winry and Riza don't meet bawww.
-There's no apple pie for Ed to eat bawww. I guess Winry didn't have time to make a pie out of those apples.
-They kinda spent too much time showing Fu and Ran Fan searching for Ling. Time that could have been better spent on other scenes.
-Ed and Al found out about Hughes' death much too soon after Roy's lie. It made me wonder why Ed didn't just chase him down and demand an explanation. There was barely any time for suspense.
-Roy's reaction to them asking about Hughes was very low-key and not half as heartbreaking as it was in the manga.
-Thanks for giving us an extraneous Edward Angsting Alone scene, BONES. I wish you could have done the scene where he apologizes to Gracia better instead.
-Overall, I felt like everything dealing with the kids finding out about Hughes was less dramatic and heart-wrenching, and more just...boring. I wonder how non-manga readers felt about it...
-They cut out half of the restroom conversation (basically everything that has to do with Ishval), which makes me wonder if there's as much point to the episode title being "Footsteps of a Comrade-in-Arms"...
-The art was kinda bad. The only exception was when Winry cried.
-LOL Focker!Envy got an eyecatch.
-The pacing of this episode really slowed down compared to previous episodes. Good, good.
-Oh god, the part where Ed and Al ran past the phonebooth completely unaware. DD:
-Though not as bad as the newspaper, the way Ed and Al learned about Hughes from Ross was pretty harsh. They weren't even told directly, they just kept talking until it finally clicked. D: "Huh?" "What?" "Wait..." "...Oh shit."
-When Ed hears Gracia crying through the door... :(
-The part where the kids walk back from the visit with Gracia and each go off on their own when they reach the hotel, silent from shock and sadness... :(
-Gracia was still her strong, awesome self. And got an eyecatch of her own. :(
-Emaciated Ling ftw. I'm glad they included the "There's something wrong with this country" line (since they skipped it in the last episode), though I laughed because he really sounded like Light there. XD; It was cool seeing him facing the Central HQ, since that's where he would be sitting when he becomes you-know-who.
From the way they rearranged scenes, it seems that they wanted to concentrate most of the Hughes angst in one episode before moving on with the plot. Which means next episode should be all about the Maria Ross incident. Hmm, I think I'll reserve my judgement on how they chose to organize this until after the Roy VS Lust fight is done with.
My main issue with this episode is that it didn't feel as effective to me, personally. Part of that could be because I already knew what would happen and so didn't have the raw emotional reaction of someone seeing it for the first time. But the lame art also played a large role in my disappointment. The way Arakawa drew some of these scenes...the expressions on the characters' faces tore my heart out in the manga. Here, they just looked bland. D: I'm sure they're saving their budget for the action scenes up ahead, but this episode was important too, you know!
On a random note, since I've been listening to the full versions of the new OP and ED all week, I like them a lot better now. Especially the ED. And I didn't get around to posting a screencap review of episode 15 last week due to real life issues...maybe I'll do it anyway, I dunno.
