The OP alone BLEW ME AWAY. I need to watch that again in high quality ASAP. This is truly Fullmetal Alchemist as we've never seen it before in animation. Ohhhhh my god.
I thought the pacing was a bit fast in the first part of the episode. Especially the first two scenes, which started abruptly, barely establishing any atmosphere first (same problem as episode 3).
It seems here Scar fought the Silver Alchemist somewhere other than Central City. Which might create a minor plot hole in that someone ought to realize Scar is still alive at this point, but whatever. The fight was awesome, well-animated, and true to the manga.
Likewise, they made the scene where Mei meets Yoki and Scar her introduction. And there was no reference to Youswell at all. Whatever, I'm just thrilled that there was Mei's RIDICULOUS EDWARD-SAMA FANTASY YESSSS! XD I guess it's not important how she learned about Ed anyway, there should be enough rumors floating around. Though come to think of it, they didn't even show how Yoki helped Mei out. Hell, Yoki's character has barely been established at all. And they replaced Mei's first impressive display of Rentanjutsu with her healing Scar's wound. BUT OH GOD, SCAR REACHING OUT TO PET XIAO MEI. MOEEEEEEEE! *____*
I think Royai fans are going to be disappointed with the Barry scene, since they cut out Roy threatening to burn him. There was only a little bit of Barry crushing on Riza too. :( And they didn't show Falman being given the duty to watch over him, but I guess it's not entirely necessary to show that. They did keep the important parts, such as Roy asking whether Barry killed Hughes.
LING. WAS. PERFECT! Though I was surprised that they had him reveal that he's a prince already. I think it's a good decision though. Having characters just sitting around talking in a hotel room may work in a manga, but it would be rather dull in animation. This takes away a little of the mystery surrounding Ling's character, but it's not a big problem. But god, Miyano Mamoru played him perfectly. Even his serious voice didn't sound too reminiscent of Light/Setsuna/Death the Kid/etc. And I LAUGHED SO HARD when he put on that strong accent AHAHA. (Hmm, but otherwise, none of the Xingese characters had a foreign accent. How are they going to show when they're speaking Xingese?)
Ran Fan and Fu were perfect too. Ahhhhh, the fight scenes! AL'S CLAPPY ALCHEMY! Ed losing his pride as an older brother. XD Ran Fan's I KEEL YOU face at Ed near the end there. XD But awww, Garfiel only had like one line and he barely stood out. And Mei traveling with Scar in his cart was adorable. Big scary serial killer cracking nuts in his hands and vowing revenge while a cute little girl and her panda sleep a few feet away lmao.
ED theme was pretty, but it doesn't stick in my head much. I mostly just remember the Elrics standing with their backs facing us, little Ed and Al buying the ingredients for their mom at the market (bawwww ;____;), and the Xing characters looking on. Mostly I am still just BLOWN AWAY by that OP and oh god I want to watch it agaaaaiiiin.
Next episode preview: Ummmm. I need to watch that again. I'm glad they're keeping Roy and Armstrong's restroom conversation.
And yeah, that's all the thoughts I have for now. I'll probably think of more later once I've rewatched the episode a few times. I can nitpick all I want, but overall, the episode was AWESOME and made me GRIN LIKE MAD the whole time I was watching.
