First off, despite all appearances, Avatar: The Last Airbender is not anime. It is not created in Japan. Obviously, it's heavily influenced by anime, but it is still an American cartoon airing on Nickelodeon. But the creators have done everything right and it's DAMN GOOD. I find it especially refreshing because the majority of the fantasy adventure genre is based on European culture and mythology. But here, we have a fantasy world that is entirely Asian-based (with Native American/Inuit influences for the Water Tribes). The 'magic powers' are based on martial arts, reincarnation is an important theme, there's a Spirit World with various spirits...even all of the writing is in ancient Chinese characters!! What a breath of fresh air. And it's made by Americans. :D
(Much thanks to amurderofcrows for introducing me to this originally. <3)
